ABOUT US

Darlington EstateThe Perth Hills Vignerons Association is the recognised voice of grape growers and wine makers of the Perth Hills Wine Region.

The region stretches from Bindoon, through Mundaring, Bickley Valley and Carmel to Jarrahdale.   The climate in the region has been compared to the Barossa Valley in South Australia.  It is typically Mediterranean; with cool to cold wet winters and warm dry summers.   Winter frosts ensure good fruit set and the warm summer days; tempered by cool nights, guarantee grape ripening.

The Darling Escarpment rises some 400 metres out of the coastal plains to the east of Perth.  Geologically the region is quite distinct, with extensive underlying granite and hills, valleys, ridges and creeks criss cross the region in every direction.   The natural vegetation is in the main jarrah and marri forest although plantings in Bindoon and Chittering, to the north, are amongst rolling farmlands.

Soils range from sandy over gravel loams to rich clays to gravely and rocky.  Valley slopes have ironstone and gravely loams; whilst to the north of the region brown loam over clay provides rich fertile soil.  The topography and size of the vineyards in general does not lend itself to machine pruning and picking, and as a result hand tended vies and hand made wines are a feature of the area.
