Feature Winemaker - Matt Bowness - "Fairbrossen Estate"

Growing up in the Hills of Perth, I spent much of my childhood in the Australian bush surrounding the Perth Hills and holidays often involved surfing trips down to Margaret River. The decision to first get involved in the wine industry coincided with the family decision to establish a vineyard in the renowned Willyabrup area of Margaret River, where our first plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay took place in 1995. A return to university followed two years later to commence studies in viticulture and winemaking. Part-time study was balanced with practical winemaking experience, including sojourns across the globe, learning the old world philosophies of France, to modern winemaking science of California and Australia. To date I have completed over 14 vintages, from Burgundy to Napa Valley to Margaret River.

It was during my returns home, I also planted a small 3 acre vineyard on the family property in the Perth Hills. Currently focussing on the Bordeaux varieties, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot, along with the sun loving variety Shiraz, I aim to produce wines where the grapes express the ground where the vines grow. Balancing full time winemaking commitments at a successful Western Australian winery, with my own love and expression of our "Fairbrossen Wines", the release of my own wine label is the culmination of 14 years working with grapes and wine and an uncompromising love of wine, food and Western Australia.
